Question: Why do Centrelink claims get rejected?

Your situation may mean theres a more suitable payment for you. For example, if youre already getting a payment from us you might be able to get the Pensioner Education Supplement (PES). Well let you know if we reject your claim because theres a better payment for you.

Well send you a letter letting you know if weve accepted or rejected your claim. You can read the letter in your Centrelink online account and in your Express Plus Centrelink mobile app.

You can expect to hear from us within 21 days of submitting your claim. Its best to submit your claim as soon as possible after your circumstances change. This way there may be less time between your last payment from your employer and your first payment from us.

If you quit your job, Centrelink may decide you are voluntarily unemployed and you may have to wait eight weeks before you get paid. You wont have to wait though if Centrelink decides the work was unsuitable or that quitting your job was reasonable in the circumstances.

It is your responsibility to update Centrelink if there are changes in your assets or income. Many people believe Centrelink has access to your bank account and will take it into consideration for your payment rate. This isnt true. Centrelink cant access your bank accounts to determine up to date figures.

How much can I earn before it affects my Centrelink?
